Hi I'm Sarah – Designer, mom, wife, believer, entrepreneur, knitter, hobby farmer, novice basket weaver and aspiring flower farmer!
I'm a long time resident of the Crowsnest Pass, having moved here as a child. We now live in Burmis on our little hobby farm. We bought our dated house three years ago and have been slowly bringing it out of the late 1990's (aka: the sage green and peach era). We still have tons to do, but as a designer it's a labor of love, and my husband and I have been gutting, renovating and building houses together since we bought our first home over twenty years ago. Back then I was just finishing Interior Design school, ready to transform our super tiny, run down, ancient gem of a starter home into something glorious. I had the vision, the drive, the dream... everything but the budget! My husband and I forged ahead with renos, doing everything ourselves, or enlisting the help of friends and family. We decorated with up-scaled hand-me-downs, yard sale and second hand store finds (spring cleanup piles left in alleys were not off limits). It was tough, but we did it. We were able to make our little house into a beautiful home, on a shoe string budget. I think that experience is what gave birth to my passion for small budget projects. The challenge to me is greater, and therefore the reward.
The yard on our first property was virtually a blank canvas. We slowly tackled that as well, creating gorgeous beds, sitting areas and meandering pathways. That project lead me to fall desperately in love with landscaping, and I decided I needed to study landscape design as well, graduating a few years later.
I originally opened Earth and Abode in 2009. I had a few really great years designing in the Pass and Pincher areas before managing my own business while juggling three tiny humans, a marriage, the building of our new (bigger) house, AND working a part time job became too much! Inevitably, Earth and Abode was put into sleep mode; always on my heart, and in my thoughts, waiting for the opportunity to revive my dream and breathe life back into my business!
Hello 2024! I am so excited to reopen Earth and Abode, and to dedicate my time and energy into creating beautiful spaces once again!
