This was an amazing transformation! The great room of this home was dull and uninviting. The existing wood staircase was visually imposing, with strong orange tones the homeowner loving described as "visually offensive'!
The homeowners main goal was to to install a wood burning fireplace and create a space that that was light and airy while still feeling cozy and inviting. They love to read and wanted to incorporate bookshelves for a small library. They would use their existing furniture and try to keep expenses minimal by doing some the labor themselves.
As the new fireplace was the priority, and the bulk of the budget would need to be dedicated to it, replacing the railing was not an option. Instead, the treads were sanded down and the orange in the wood was muted with a semitransparent stain. Railings and stringers were painted to match the trims. The homeowners were able to complete the labor on the stairs themselves, and transformed the staircase and loft railing for under $300!
The beautiful new fireplace was designed to include a concrete hearth with incorporated wood storage, flanked with matching bookshelves and finished with a warm cultured stone which picks up the tones of both the updated staircase treads and existing flooring.
The end result speaks for itself: A bright, calm, inviting room to sit by the warmth of a cozy fire, reading and relaxing!
